1. Your Responsibilities
You must complete at least 4 meetings with your Educational Supervisor (ES), recorded in Horus:
- August – Induction meeting
- Nov/Dec – End of Post 1 review + plan for Post 2
- March/April – End of Post 2 review + plan for Post 3
- May/June – Final review before ARCP
You may meet more frequently if needed.
- You must arrange all meetings yourself.
If you cannot, contact the education team immediately.
2. Role of the Educational Supervisor (ES)
The ES oversees your training and development throughout the year, including:
- Monitoring educational & professional progress
- Ensuring assessments and records are completed
- Highlighting concerns to the Foundation Programme Training Director
- Providing/arranging pastoral and career support
The ES helps ensure you meet curriculum requirements and use your e‑portfolio appropriately.
3. Role of the Clinical Supervisor (CS)
The CS supports your training during each placement, including:
- Day‑to‑day supervision and workplace observation
- Helping integrate you into the team
- Ensuring you have opportunities to learn and receive feedback
- Providing clear performance feedback
- Meeting at the start and end of each placement (mid‑placement if needed)
At least one CS report must be supported by PSG feedback.
4. What You Need to Do (and When)
Before Starting – Shadowing Week / Induction

- Sign the 3 required declarations (probity, health, conditions of joining)
- Check your contact details are correct

August ES Induction Meeting
Be ready to discuss:
- Your background, training experience, and any personal issues affecting work
- What you hope to gain this year
- Career ideas and development plans
- Understanding of assessment requirements
- Your PDP and how to achieve it
- Study leave/taster plans (F1s may use up to 5 days of F2 taster allowance)
Agree how to contact your ES and ensure the meeting is logged.
Curriculum reminder
- 13 Foundation Professional Capabilities (FPCs) grouped under 3 HLOs
- Each portfolio item can map to max 3 capabilities
- Each capability should have no more than 5 items
- Best evidence = “doing/can do” (SLEs, assessments)
Nov/Dec – End of Placement Review with ES
You must complete:
- Draft summary narratives for each HLO
- Regular, contemporaneous SLEs and assessments
- CS end-of-placement report
- Teaching log entries
- Evidence linked to curriculum (correctly mapped)
- Record any absences
- Discuss next placement plan
Meeting must be logged.
Horus instructions
- Forms (start new) → complete assessments - To add an assessor start typing in their name in the correct field and wait for the system to catch up and select the assessor. If the assessor is not listed you will need to create an assessor on the system. The assessor will then be emailed a link to the form.

March/April – End of Placement Review with ES
Same requirements as Nov/Dec plus:

You will need to complete a TAB assessment in January. Further guidance will be sent out to all foundation doctors during the year to detail the process and the
May/June – Final ES Sign‑Off Meeting
You must have the following in Horus:
- CS reports from all posts
- Completed TAB
- At least one PSG feedback
- Evidence mapped to all 13 FPCs
- Regular SLEs and assessments
- Minimum 60 teaching hours logged (30 core + 30 core/non‑core)
- Reflection and summary narratives for each HLO
- Attendance record
- Engagement with feedback
Discuss any concerns with your ES.
The education team will send sign‑off details closer to the time.
5. Meetings with Your Clinical Supervisor
You must:
- Meet the CS at start and end of each placement
- Ensure CS completes the induction form and end‑of‑placement report
- Consider mid‑placement meetings
- Ensure at least one report includes PSG feedback
Appendix 1 – Study Leave Summary
Policy - Study Leave - Foundation
F2 Study Leave (30 days total)
Includes:
- 5 days teaching (min 4 regional + 6 hrs foundation teaching)
- 1 day simulation
- 5 days tasters (F1s may take taster days)
- 5 days GP learning sets
- 2 days ALS
F2s not in GP → 17 days available
F2s in GP → 12 days available
Teaching Hours
- All teaching must be logged in Horus learning log
- Includes regional, local, departmental and eLearning
- Hard‑to‑verify teaching must have an additional achievement form
ARCP Requirements
- Minimum 60 hours teaching
- Minimum 30 hours core (local + regional + simulation)
- Max 6 eLearning modules
- F2s must attend 4 regional teaching days (24 hrs)
